NASA Aviation Education Training

Will it fly? 99s make meat tray gliders.

On Saturday, January 16th, the Albuquerque 99s joined together with our neighbors to the north to eat, learn more about teaching children about aviation, and enjoy being together with others who love flying. The Rio Grande Norte chapter of the Ninety-Nines came to Albuquerque from various cities in New Mexico and Colorado. We met them at Seven Bar Aviation for a full day of training.

Our workshop facilitator was just fantastic. Celia Vanderpool, a Ninety-Nine herself, is a NASA-trained representative who was instrumental in getting the program started that joined the efforts of the Ninety-Nines and NASA to educate children about flying. She flew in from California just to meet with us.

During Celia's training, she explained the relationship that NASA and the Ninety-Nines have established. We are excited about joining this program to help instill an excitement in the next generation about different aspects of aviation.

We watched some videos, learned about available resources, practiced doing some demonstrations. She showed us how to make simple experiments to demonstrate some of the physics of flight. We made our own balloon jets and meat tray gliders for our sample bags. Celia provided a notebook full of lesson plans and a CD with more. She also gave us web site URLs for fun activities and information.

We came away with loads of tools to use for years to come.

If you are interested in the program that the Ninety-Nines and NASA have designed, please check out this web site. The more children we expose to the joys of aviation for recreation and careers, the more our next generation will seek to become pilots...or astronauts!
