The air traffic
control tower offers a beautiful view of the Sandia Mountains.
One of our activities included a tour of the Air Traffic Control Tower at
the Albuquerque International Airport (Sunport). The bottom floor of the
tower houses Albuquerque Approach and Departure, and the controllers that
most of our group communicates with when we fly into and out of
Albuquerque.
Our day began with lunch at Applebees near the
airport. We enjoyed visiting with guests from the Rio Grande Norte
chapter. Then we observed the controllers while they worked. They were
very willing to share information with us and help us know what we can do
to make their job easier when we fly.
At the top of the tower, the Sunport controllers
showed us their equipment. They also answered all our questions and let us
watch while they worked.
We have a much better idea now of how to communicate
with the tower. And now we have faces to go with the voices we hear on the
radio!
